Children will learn how to express their ideas clearly, by using complete sentences and well-constructed paragraphs. The class encompasses grammar, sentence structure, capitalization, and punctuation, and paragraph organization. Students will be taught the six traits of writing.
We will learn how to write an exciting story, filled with character and voice. This class will focus on how to get and develop ideas for stories. Students will be working with several kinds of graphic organizers. They will learn how to give their characters traits that make them interesting and exciting. They will learn what makes a good plot and will be given the tools for making sure their plots are consistent. I will help the students decide what point of view to write from and teach them how to build a proper setting for their characters and stories.
We will spend some time focusing on grammar rules for dialogue. They will be taught how to make their writing interesting and realistic. We will learn how to polish introductions, transitions, and conclusions. When the class is over students will have written at least 5 pages of fiction. The hope is that they will then go on to finish their stories at home and that they will learn how exciting and fun writing truly is!
This class will be graded on a rubric, making it suitable for all students in grades 4 – 9. This class is offered on two different days. The first date is:
January 25 - February 29
